Tuesday 23 February 2021: Plastic Free Eastbourne
Oliver Sterno is Community Leader of and Co-ordinator Refill Eastbourne. Oliver described their various initiatives and activities and how he got the whole project going. They have set up water fountains, or refill stations, to cut use of plastic bottles and hundreds of volunteers have come forward to adopt and clean up the rubbish on every one of the 93 beaches along the seafront.
Eastbourne has joined a network of communities across the UK who are leading the way to tackle throw away plastic at source. The town has been awarded Plastic Free Community status by marine conservation charity, Surfers Against Sewage (SAS), in recognition of the work it has done to start reducing the impact of single-use plastic on the environment. Oliver suggested ways that small communities in villages, and small towns like Rye, could set up a plastic free programme.
